LIME REALTY GROUP like most of you, is finding it hard to beat the heat this summer! But we’re giving it a good try! Swimming, hiking trips to the mountains and old fashioned AC!!! But we do live in a part of the country that gets unusually hot this time of year and we thought it would be a good idea to talk a little bit about Heat Exhaustion.
We’ve noticed a lot of people with flu or cold-like symptoms these past few weeks and although you may not recognize it for what it is, you should. There are three heat-related syndromes caused by your body overheating. Heat cramps is the mildest of these and Heatstroke is the most severe, even life threatening. If you’ve gone far enough to reach the point of Heat Exhaustion, it’s time to step back and keep yourself from plunging headlong into Heatstroke.
Here are some of the symptoms that you’re nearing Heat Exhaustion… You can find yourself with cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat. If you’re experiencing heavy sweating, faintness, dizziness or fatigue in hot weather, you might be close. Weak, rapid pulse rate with low blood pressure when you stand up. Muscle cramps, nausea and headache are also signs to watch out for.
If you notice any of these symptoms during extremely hot or humid periods of exertion, stop all activity and rest. Move to a cooler place and drink lots of cool water or sports drinks. If your symptoms don’t improve within an hour or your body temperature reaches 104 F or higher, it’s time to get yourself to the doctor. And right now!
In hot weather, your body cools itself mainly by sweating. The evaporation of your sweat regulates your body temperature. However, if you’re working or exercising too hard in hot, humid weather, your body is less able to cool itself efficiently.
As a result, you may develop heat cramps. Signs of heat cramps include heavy sweating, fatigue, thirst and muscle cramps. If you drink lots of fluid especially drinks containing electrolytes, get into a cooler location and rest, you can relieve the cramps and avoid Heat Exhaustion.
Be careful out there and make sure you’re staying hydrated! Heat Exhaustion is no respecter of age so don’t think you’re too young. Play it safe and get lots of fluids!
