Here’s an interesting website Renae Stucki Realtor found called The Mind Unleashed.  It’s an article written by a nurse who cared for the terminally ill for the last weeks of their lives.  It’s amazing and completely unexpected.  You can read the article HERE.  But afterward, come back and we’ll highlight the 5 regrets in this blog.

The article presents the regrets from the most common to the least.  I’ll go the other way around because I think the final regret actually encompasses all the rest.

5.  I wish that I’d let myself be happier – I think all of the others fall under this one because none of them would matter if you were living this one.  Happiness really is a choice and it’s a powerful motivator.  We do a lot in life just because we think it will make us happy.  It’s kinda crazy when you think about it in those terms.  Maybe it’s time to start thinking about being happy today.

4.  I wish I’d stayed in touch with my friends – Too often we lose touch with people we care about and then they’re gone from our lives and we never get to spend time with them again.  It’s a shame friendships fade and sometimes disappear.  It would be amazing if we could maintain these relationships our whole lives.

3.  I wish I had the courage to express my feelings – This one is a real tear jerker and I suspect this one is most commonly expressed by men.  The nurse points out how damaging bottled up, unexpressed feelings can be on the physical and emotional well being.  It’s a liberating feeling when you set aside the concern of how others will see you when you express your feelings honestly.

2.  I wish I didn’t work so hard – I think we call all relate to this one.  We wish we’d had more free time.  More time to enjoy our loved ones and do the things we really enjoy rather than just work.

1.  I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me – This one is so similar to being happy and not working so hard.  It really is just another way to say all of the other comments.  But it could also cover a lot of specific regrets people don’t express individually.  I think people really want to say, they wish they’d taken some chances.

This was an amazing article because it shows the things, we as people often deny ourselves and overlook.  Our happiness being the biggest.  Maybe it’s time to give yourself a break and start making decisions that will make your life more worthwhile and satisfying.
