Have you ever wondered where the tradition of making resolutions on New Years comes from? The idea of making a promise to improve yourself or engage in a good act at the start of a new year dates all the way back to the Babylonians who would famously promise their gods to return borrowed items or pay debts.
The Romans also did this but they would make promises to one God in particular… Janus!
During Medieval times, knights would take the “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry.
There are many other religious parallels to New Years Resolutions including the Christian liturgical season of Lent; even though Lent is more about sacrifice than self improvement.
No matter where you think they came from, by the start of the 21st century, about 40% of American adults formed New Years Resolutions and the number continues to grow.
